Assisting the Vermont Agency of Transportation with a Cultural Change

THE CHALLENGE

How to support VTrans in building a culture that allowed it to recruit workers of all genders and ethnicities?

THE STORY

We helped the Agency define and manage its culture. Primarily, leaders focused on clarifying expectations, training managers in new skills, and holding them accountable to implementing those skills.  Increasing accountability signaled to managers that the change was important.  A detailed communication plan was also developed that specified key messaging for each stakeholder group, who would communicate with each stakeholder, and the means and frequency of the communication.

THE OUTCOME

“Our goal was to institutionalize this initiative….  Thanks to Greg’s work, this initiative is widely viewed as a success and many of the tactics used over the past decade have become a part of our new culture.  What has struck me the most about Greg is his ability to connect with anybody.  From the frontline maintenance workers to the Secretary of Transportation.”
